Our Adopted Beaches
Ecological Society is excited to have adopted Marina Mother's Beach to contribute to protecting local coastal ecology. Mothers Beach was created in Marina del Rey in the late 1950s and boasts a sandy, family-friendly estuary with little to no surf, playgrounds, and picnic areas.
Unfortunately, the marina's engineered protected harbor severely limits circulation and wave action, trapping pollutants near shore and discouraging natural flushing. Surrounding infrastructure—concrete, impervious surfaces, harbor activities—also drains stormwater directly to the marina. Heal the Bay repeatedly places Mother's Beach as one of California's worst beaches for bacterial contamination, frequently due to E. coli and fecal indicator bacteria.
Our group accepts the responsibility of caring for the beach and promoting awareness in our community of the problems caused by marine debris and the need for protecting coastal and ocean resources.
